The NYYC members commissioned a new design and twelve vessels were ordered in the fall of 1915. The yachts were originally rigged as gaff-rigged sloops, without the bowsprit, and rigged to be cruisers with good accommodations and could be crewed by a small crew of three. They were the hottest racing class of their time and were called the “The Fighting Forties and the “Roaring Forties. The main attribute of the Forties seems to be that of possessing an ability to withstand all kinds of rough handling, both by men and weather. It is said that they never reefed in a race. Two of the class yachts under the yawl rigs have won the Bermuda Race. It is believed they were the last of the “one-design” class of yachts built that were of that size and built in any considerable number by the same builder. After the first year, the sail area increased and a bowsprit was added.

Several efforts have been done to convince the former owner to pass her on, as Marga was supposed to be his restoration project, after his retirement. In the end, thanks to the enthusiasm of our client, he let her go.

While we are writing, the restoration will take all 2011 and partly 2012. Meanwhile huge researches are being taken about the boat and her Designer, C.O.Liljegren (1890-1920), in order to find the original rigging and deckplans, prior to restore her. C.O. Liljegren, was a swedish designer who designed a lot of successful 6m and 8m International Class, and who is known for having worked under Nat Herreshoff in the US, not to be mistaken with his brother, the head of the Liljegren Shipyard in Goteborg.

Marga will be very soon well known in the Mediterranean circuit of classic regattas and will compete against such ever-winners as Kipawa and Rowdy

“Pauline”, as she was originally named, was the second of the New York Forty Foot Class launched at Herreshoff’s Manufacturing facility in Bristol, Rhode Island.
There were a total of fourteen, two of which were built in 1926. Only four remain today, including the well known “Rowdy” which keeps winning almost all the classic regattas in the Mediterranean. “Pauline” was photographed throughout her history of racing by world renowned photographers like Stanley Rosenfeld; whose collection is at Mystic Seaport and in his book the “The Story of American Yachting”, Alfred Loomis (”Yachts Under Sail”), Levick (”Sailing Craft”, by Schoettle) and by L. Francis Herreshoff (”Captain Nat Herreshoff”).

Pauline had her name changed several times with various ownership including: “Banshee” (Mr. Henry L. Maxwell and “Chinook” (Mr. Howard F. Whitney Jr.). She is only one of two vessels that had custom ordered wheel steering, the other vessels had a tiller. An engine was added in the sixties and presently she is powered with a Perkins diesel. Her original fir decks were replaced with 2″x2″ teak around 1960 and a large doghouse replaced the original flush companionway hatch. The new raised house replaced the larger one in the early 70’s. The interior is raised paneling (original), as are most of the interior appointments.
